IIntroduction to Termites
The Eastern Subterranean termite is the most common termite found in the Northeast and is the most damaging. They live in colonies underground because they have a low tolerance for air and light. Each colony is built around a king and queen, the sole purpose of termites is reproduction. Most of the termites that comprise the colony are worker termites, the ones that cause the damage to your home or business.
Termites require moisture and their sole source of food is cellulose from wood. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, they cause over $2,000,000,000 in damage in the United States per year. Because of their cryptic nature, structural infestations of subterranean termites are usually not visible. Most people become aware of an infestation when annual flights of winged termites (often called swarmers) occur in structures. After indoor flights, most swarmers are found dead near windows or in sinks and bath tubs. Subterranean termites form a network of interconnected feeding sites beneath or above the soil surface. A single colony of may contain 60,000 - 1,000,000 termites and forage up to 150 feet in search of food. Termites consume wood at the rate of 2 to 3% of their body weight each day. When subterranean termites search for food above ground, they may enter a house through small cracks or joints in the foundation, or by building shelter tubes along the foundation wall. These tubes are highways connecting the underground termite population with above ground food sources. Each year over 2 million buildings are invaded by termites. It doesn't matter where you live, your home or business can be a target for termites. Even buildings and houses on concrete slabs are threatened by termites finding their way through small cracks. Professional termite pest control is recommended if you notice termites around the house. Termites are so clever and efficient that no efforts at termite-proof construction methods have worked out completely successful.
Worker termites search for food sources and share it with others in the colony. They are busy at work 24 hours a day, attacking the structure of your home or business from inside the wood.
